About Jim Kearns
Functionless wood art. No purpose is the purpose. Create to
create and enjoy the process as it unfolds.
Wood grains have always fascinated me, drawing my attention to the various patterns and surprises that hide beneath their surfaces. After working in construction for years and giving a shot at making furniture I began to feel some regret about the amount of lumber scraps that ended up being wasted. Combining my interest of patterns created by the natural beauty of all types of wood with my desire to waste as little scrap as possible the idea to start making abstract art with the scraps was born. I began piecing together different grains and species from old scraps people were willing to give away and the designs began to take form. My favorite pieces seem to appear on their own, it is as if the wood wants to be placed in a certain manner, creating interesting faces, waves, or entities. I enjoy sharing the work with any and all observers.
